FYP
Antenna Design & Simulation Optimisation (Engineering FYP)
An Electrical & Electronic Engineering FYP: a microstrip patch antenna designed with full-wave simulation, plus a machine learning method to reduce simulation runs.
Overview
An engineering student needed an antenna design that met the supervisor's return-loss and gain targets, with evidence that the design method saved simulation effort.
Client challenge
Full-wave simulations are slow, and the supervisor changed the design requirements late in FYP2, leaving little time to redo the work.
Solution
We automated the simulation software from Python, ran a baseline parameter sweep, then trained a surrogate model to propose designs that hit the targets in far fewer runs. Thesis figures and tables were generated straight from the data, so they always matched the results.

Process
How this project was delivered
- 1
Set up a reproducible simulation environment
- 2
Re-scoped quickly when the requirements changed
- 3
Validated the final design across simulation settings
- 4
Packaged data, scripts and outputs for submission
Results
Outcomes that mattered
- Final design met the supervisor's targets
- Many times fewer simulation runs than a brute-force sweep
- Fully reproducible results
